You just finished a run. You're reaching for a protein bar — but should you?
Here's the truth: most protein bars fall into the "ultra-processed foods" category, and dietary patterns high in ultra-processed foods are associated with higher risk for type 2 diabetes, anxiety, and cardiovascular disease. Tufts Now Many are, as Tufts nutrition experts put it, little more than glorified candy bars.
Meanwhile, a good nut butter delivers real, whole-food nutrition in its simplest form.
Here's what your body actually needs post-run:
Post-exercise nutrition should focus on refueling with carbohydrates, repairing with protein, and rehydrating with fluids and electrolytes. National Peanut Board Peanut butter ticks the first two boxes naturally and then some.
- Protein: At 25g of protein per 100g, peanuts pack more protein than any other nut, providing the amino acids your muscles need to grow, recover, and stay healthy. Peanut Institute
- Healthy fats: At least 50% of the fat in peanuts is the heart-healthy monounsaturated kind, making them an energy-dense food your body can efficiently convert to fuel. Peanut Institute
- Carbohydrates: Post-exercise carbohydrate intake is essential for replenishing glycogen stores, restoring energy, and preparing muscles for subsequent training. MDPI
And the timing matters: consuming protein and carbohydrates within the anabolic window, 30 minutes to two hours post-exercise, can significantly enhance muscle protein synthesis and glycogen restoration, facilitating faster and more effective recovery. MDPI
The difference between peanut butter and a protein bar? What's not in it. No fillers. No coating. No 30-ingredient label.
